The year is 2022 and Gainesville looks different. It will change even more in the coming years. It’s been going through the kind of changes the rest of Florida has been going through. The green has been replaced by gray concrete and the heat from that rises from the pavement to mingle with the ozone. COVID still sits on the back of everyone’s mind. The businesses have closed or will be closing. Every single day you wake up, there is news of death and war. The Recession. Nobody knew then what would be happening, but it was all happening. That’s the scene. In Gainesville, there is something called the gratitude bell. I ring it every time I’m there, which is every day because it offers an escape, even when I’m distressed, which is often because I’ve struggled with depression, the same kind that weighs down the shoulders of everyone I meet on the streets because something isn’t right and we all know it and pretend it doesn’t exist. Gainesville is destroying itself slowly. Venues used to connect the University to Downtown but those have all been torn down and replaced with luxury student living. I hear about it every day as more and more trees are cut down to make way for the construction machines of man. The conversations in this town are often tied to the addictions, the desire to escape and the powerlessness that comes from watching a society that completely destroys itself, the music and how it’s the only thing to hold on to, but even that is slowly stamped out as the war calls in headlines. The weight of the world is too heavy for one human to bare it alone, and nobody knows how to hold it together. There are moments you fight for connection on the dance floor and between shots, but loneliness blankets the streets. That’s the context. The year is 2022. The gratitude bell has been removed with no sign as to where it’s gone, if it’ll come back (in 2022 it was repainted and returned. In 2024 it is gone and has not come back). Some of us have our own tethers to reality and to lose such a gift is a level of… When I walk by the wooden arch June 10, 2022, and it is gone, I feel like that’s a sign of something. I pass it by and tell my loveliest friend about it absence, whose body sings like a bell and dances like the leaves on the tree, and we sing for the bell and call out our gratitude, anyway. And then I go on my way. 1st street, in front on the Hippodrome, is closed unexpectedly for the day. Some music video is being filmed downtown and they get a whole street. The Gainesville Instagram informs, but doesn’t say who. As I walk down the streets to the Art Circus in a dress much to hot for a concrete summer in central Florida swamps, I see first the juggler on the street corner and then am distracted by the woman on a horse. I’m talking to my mother on the phone about finding gratitude anyway, fighting for it, singing for it, praying for it, and being okay when everything is not okay and the weight of the world bares down on sagging shoulders and broken hearts. When I hang up the phone, passing Dragon Fly, there is a man pulling something out of a van looking disheveled and who, to me, in this life, is a familiar face, if not a stranger since our only conversations have been post-show autographs from the many different variations of myself, all socially awkward and mostly angry, in a different state, a different beloved city. First my brain is shocked even as it makes sense of the reality that the person standing in front of me stood on stage of the shows I used to go to when I was a teenager who prayed for death. Whose voice had helped develop my own. When I say Jukebox the Ghost is my favorite band, I mean that my first tattoo is the ghost on my right shoulder because that’s who I was at that time in my life, and they had a song about such things. It almost doesn’t seem real, and it’s so silly. Probably my favorite moment in a sea of moments of exquisite joy and deep agony all mixed together. I replay it in my head when the thought demons are cruel and when the world feels impossibly dark. My level of shock at walking into my favorite band since high school on my favorite street in all the world, filled with my favorite trees (you can see them in this video) and my favorite friends and my favorite buildings, well. Something like that isn’t real. It’s a fantasy. I hadn’t even known about the new album. I think I said something like “are you real? Is this happening?” Because that’s just something like a mental breakdown. It’s a movie scene, unbelievable. Jumping the shark, almost. If I didn’t have pictures, I wouldn’t believe in myself. Los would call it serendipity weeks later when I conjured the story up to beat back the darkness. Something to hold on to. Jukebox the Ghost has a song called “Good Day” I used to play on repeat. It starts “I think that I would like, to invite everyone I’ve known, dead and alive, to a street where we can finally free” and I imagined 1st street as that street where the heartbreak would somehow end. In my fantasies, my Dad would see the life I built for myself and he would meet these people I loved and there would be no more guns and nobody would overdose in back rooms, and we would just all love each other. The kind of corny sentiments you keep to yourself but keep you going. Childish dreams about a day when man stops killing himself and everything around him. They were nice enough to offer me a picture, and they signed my beloved journal where I tracked my pain and sadness and darkness, where I held on to my beauty and light and joy. They even asked if I was interested in being an extra for a music video. So on Sunday that year, I would be at Baby J’s, before it officially opened, to be in the Cheers music video. I’m sharing this story 2 years later, the anniversary of it. About two months ago I passed this street to see them cutting down my favorite tree that I had fought to save a year ago. Her leaves bleeding into the sidewalk. Last year, in my grief and fear for her upcoming sacrifice to the pavement gods, I’d sat at her roots and talked to everyone interested about what they were doing here and elsewhere. About Cop City. About how they were killing us and leaving us to rot with every tree they cut down. How everything under the sun was going to burn and we’d have no one to blame but ourselves. I left art on her trunk that some rich woman would tear down, tell me I was killing the tree (irony) by pinning it up like that. Still, she lives forever in seconds of this video, watching the circus. I find a lot of intrigue in the construction of this video. How perfectly it does align with the character of Gainesville. How the choices of corporations and the local government have stripped away the character and nature of this place, how the culture is turned into Dollar Generals and my friends are all fighting their addictions because how do you love anything in a world like this? How do you go about your day normally when as I type, they drop another bomb on Palestine? At least when my father died, he just died, he was not screaming in agony as his loved ones bled out around him mutilated. How do you wake up in the morning when there are bodies lining the roads, our wooden friends, our flesh and blood brothers and sisters left to starve without homes because there’s another condo that needs to be built and charged stained dollars for? I look back on this moment and then I share it, because that is how life is endured. I got to meet my favorite band on the streets of Gainesville unexpectedly on a day that was just some day, in the throes of my grief and my heartbreak, as the dystopia continues it’s endless construction , clawing towards healing in a world that profits off your pain and your anguish. It was so impossibly beautiful I cannot help but believe that there is some notion of reality that exists beyond Ozempic ads on the television screen hiding the genocide in Palestine and Sudan and the Congos. I feel distraught and hopeless and powerless, and I feel anger and fear. My rage clenches my jaw and my body shakes from it. But I remember this moment and I understand that I cannot lie down and die to it, I cannot let the hopelessness and defeat stop me from doing what must be done, what everyone must do. How do you survive in a world like this? You take the mallet and you hit the air where the bell used to hang and you let the world know you will not fight in this war and you will not ask your brothers and sisters to bleed for your luxury. You put down the hammer and you offer your hand to your brother and sister and you plant the seeds of the fruiting trees and you dance in revelry. You raise the flags that symbolize love and you sing. Thanks Jukebox the Ghost, for the time you came to Gainesville and gave me something to continue holding out hope for.
